Where to Find a Good Mechanic

As a group, auto mechanics are good people. They work hard and have trained hard to be able to do so. A good mechanic can keep your car on the road and help you save money in the process.

Unfortunately, as it is with all professions, there are a few bad apples in the mechanic bunch. The horror stories that relate to them are enough to scare any self-respecting motorist half to death.

If you suspect a problem with your vehicle and need a good mechanic, there is no need to run for the hills with your wallet in hand. You can land a skilled and reputable hire if you are willing to do a little homework. To find a mechanic you can trust, consider doing these things:

• Getting referrals – Perhaps the best and easiest way to find a good mechanic is to get referrals for one. Check with family, friends and even coworkers to see who they rely on. If a particular garage or professional pops up more than once, you could have a keeper without looking any further.

• Checking consumer reports – If you do not find recommendations that appeal, pick out a few mechanics or garages from a phone book or other source and then check into their reputations yourself. The Better Business Bureau is a good place to check.

Finding a good mechanic can be almost as important as having a trusted family doctor. With a little work, you can land a hire you will be happy with.
