With schools closing their doors for the long summer months, it is now time for families to start putting big vacation plans into action. If your trip will involve a long car ride, there are some things you will want to do to help ensure your vehicle will get you from Point A to Point B and back again safely.
Before hitting the highway for some summer fun, make sure to:
•Have the car fully inspected – Take your vehicle in and get an oil change, tune up and have the basic systems checked. Make sure to tell the mechanic how far you intend to travel.
•Inspect the tires – If the mechanic does not inspect the tires, be sure to do so yourself. The treads should be in good condition for a long-distance drive and the pressure should be properly maintained. Checking these two things can help make sure your car is truly up for the trip and it can save you on fuel economy as you drive, as well.
•Check the emergency preparations – Be sure to put an emergency kit into the vehicle. Your car should have a spare tire, a tire pressure gauge, roadside emergency signs and basic tools onboard. Also, if you do not have it, now is a good time to purchase emergency roadside coverage through your insurance company or an auto club.
Packing your bags is not enough to prepare for a big road trip. Make sure your car is in tiptop shape before you head out, too.
