Even with the price of gasoline much lower than it was not too far in the past, it is more than some people want to pay. If you are in love with the idea of saying goodbye to the pump forever in favor of an electric car, you might want to tread slowly.

While it is true electric cars are likely the wave of the future, they are not necessarily the wave of now. Full electric cars are available, but they do have some downsides at present. Considering the potential cons, many experts recommended going with hybrids and sucking up the fact that sucking up gas will be a way of life for at least a little while longer.

So, why are electric cars not necessarily all they are cracked up to be right now? These potential cons can make them problematic:

•Slow operating speeds – Many full electric cars just do not have the power of their gas-using counterparts. In fact, some models cannot even reach 50 mph.
•Low charge retention times – Many full electric cars just cannot sustain travel for more than a few hours. This is not good for long commutes and even worse for long-distance travel.
•Trouble with maintenance – Most garages are simply not equipped to handle electric cars. This means if mechanical problems arise, there could be major issues involved in getting a car fixed.
Electric cars may very well replace those on the road today. At present, however, they might not be the best bet for motorists who need reliability, speed and performance.
