Driving Tips for Long Trips

The current economy is forcing many people to take to the roads when they want to get out of town for a little “R & R.” However, driving for long periods of time can take a lot out of a person. That is why it is best to follow these tips when you are thinking of taking to the open road!

• Always make sure you get enough sleep the night before you leave for your trip. As excited as you may be to get out of town, you need to be alert, therefore make sure you go to bed early if you are looking to leave at the crack of dawn. Furthermore, don’t skimp on breakfast. Eat something healthy that will not make you sleepy.
• Make sure you take necessary breaks. As much as you may just want to “get there,” give yourself the opportunity to get out and stretch and walk around. This will improve your ability to be alert.
• If possible, take turns with another driver throughout the trip. This will allow you to relax your mind and keep you from getting worn out.
• If you have some sort of vehicle issue, get off of the road at the next exit. Unless it cannot be avoided, do not pull over to the shoulder, it’s dangerous.
• Make sure you stay aware of speed limits and know the laws wherever you are driving.
• Keep aware of traffic and weather conditions. If you know bad weather is coming, plan for it. It is much safer in the long run than trying to make it through and possibly endangering yourself and your travel companions.
