Few things can instantly jazz up the appearance of a car faster than a set of slick alloy rims. Steel just cannot compare to the looks or even match some of the other benefits. There are, however, a few cons that motorists need to be aware of before charging ahead with a purchase.

If you are considering alloy wheels, chances are you already know the benefits of the buy extend well beyond the looks. These lighter weight aluminum and/or magnesium rims can improve vehicle performance, heighten aerodynamics, increase handling ability and even dissipate brake heat better than steel wheels. It is for these reasons, and the sleek appearance, that many drivers simply prefer alloy.

As great as alloy wheels are at improving performance and even safety, there are some potential downsides to the purchase. They include:

Their delicacy – Alloy rims are not as durable as steel. The truth is these rims can suffer damage easier. While it is sometimes possible to have them repaired, it can be a costly venture.
Their cost – It does cost more for manufacturers to make alloy rims than steel. With this in mind, the entry price tends to be higher, as well.
Alloy rims account for more than half the wheels on the road today. This modernized blend does improve appearance, safety and vehicle performance, but it is not a panacea.
